The future of IT: Managing BIG data…

by Ivanka on June 11, 2012

One of the reasons why I love travelling is because you meet so many interesting people. On my flight from Boston to Dallas today I sat next to an entrepreneur who is developing commercial applications for holograms. Yup – the star wars kinda holograms in 3D.

The technology is here – they have it working! Just imagine what that will do for education and simulations? Or the military when planning strategic moves in unknown terrain?
The 3D holographic images jump up from a table top tablet device and you can work with it from every angle. WOW.

Where does big data come into play? To maintain the fidelity of the image, the data is not compresses so one 2×2 foot image is a whopping 1.4 TERRABYTE in data.

Anybody who can solve the puzzle on how to make this technology work on a mobile device will become soooo successful! Imagine being in class and having to learn about dinosaurs… simply have a dinosaur pop up from your tablet so view it in true 3D.

Or simulations…. rather than having surgeons practicing on dolls or other objects (which cost money etc.) you can first have them practice their skill on a 3D holographic simulation machine.

The applications are amazing – but bring enormous amounts of data to be managed. How will we be able to do this?

As per usual – food for thought.
