# See What Resale Revenue Leaves Behind

Source: https://ivankamenken.com/revenue-not-cash-resale · Last updated 31 October 2026

You resell other brands through an online marketplace, sales keep rising, and the supplier invoice still lands before the cash comes back. Ivanka Menken uses the Margin-First Review inside Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring, a 6-month programme at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, to put what each product line leaves after product cost, fees and shipping beside the date its cash returns. You leave with a written review that shows which lines fund the next order.

## Sales are rising and the bank is not

- You can quote revenue but not the margin on each line.
- Supplier payments land before the cash comes back.
- You keep adding products because sales are rising.

**THE MOMENT:** Sales are up again this quarter. A supplier wants payment for the next order this week, and the marketplace will not pay out for another fortnight. You open the dashboard and see revenue climbing, but you cannot say which lines paid for themselves after product cost, marketplace fees and shipping. You order again anyway, because the busiest lines look like the safest ones.

### THE CATALOGUE, AS IT STANDS

- Revenue by line: known, every day
- Product cost by line: in the supplier invoices
- Marketplace fees by line: in the payout report
- Shipping by line: in one courier bill
- Cash date by line: not known

## Chase more sales volume

The obvious fix was volume. More listings, more stock and more advertising behind the lines that sold fastest. Sales rose. The bank balance did not. Every new order needed supplier cash up front, the marketplace paid out on its own schedule, and the busiest lines were not always the ones leaving money behind. More volume on a thin line meant more cash tied up for longer.

## Revenue by line, margin by nobody

Ivanka noticed the founder could quote revenue for every line from memory, but not the margin left after product cost, marketplace fees and shipping on any of them. The costs lived in three different places: supplier invoices, the payout statement and the courier bill. Nobody had put them on one row. The catalogue was being run on a revenue view, so the busiest lines got reordered first.

## A revenue view of a cash business

The diagnosis was not a sales problem. It was a revenue view of the catalogue in a business that needed a cash view. Some lines were busy and still did not fund their own next order, because their margin after fees and shipping was thin and their cash came back late.
The reframe: in resale, revenue is the marketplace’s number and cash is yours. A line earns its place by what it leaves after product cost, fees and shipping, and by how quickly that money comes back to pay the supplier. A founder can sell millions of dollars of other people’s products over the years and still need to know what each sale leaves behind. Read that first, then decide what to reorder.

> In resale, revenue is the marketplace’s number. Cash is yours.

**The cost of staying stuck:** Scaling a revenue view means ordering more of the lines that tie up cash longest. The busier the catalogue gets, the earlier the supplier is paid and the later the money comes back.

## The tool: Margin-First Review

The Margin-First Review puts each product line on one row: the sale, the product cost, the marketplace fees, the shipping, what the line leaves, and the date that cash comes back. Margin first, then timing, then a decision for each line: keep it, reprice it or slow the orders.

It is one page for the catalogue, one row per line. For each line, the margin left after product cost, fees and shipping, and how long the cash is out before the payout returns it. At the bottom, the lines to reprice and the orders to slow before the next supplier payment.

It replaces a revenue dashboard read as if it were a bank balance, costs scattered across three reports, and reorders decided by which line sold fastest last week.

### What goes on the page

1. The sale: revenue for the line this month
2. Product cost: what the supplier invoice says, per unit
3. Marketplace fees: from the payout report, per line
4. Shipping: split out by line, not left in one bill
5. What the line leaves: the margin after all three
6. The cash date: when that margin is back in the bank, against the next supplier payment

It sits inside Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring, next to the Price-Cash-Confidence Chain and the monthly Money-and-Clarity Scorecard. You bring the figures, Ivanka asks the questions, and you take the numbers to your own accountant. It is coaching, not accounting or financial advice, and there is no separate checkout.

## One row per line

In the first session, Ivanka took the founder’s three busiest lines and put each on a row: sale, product cost, fees, shipping, what was left and when the cash came back. Then she asked two questions. Which line looks busiest and leaves least? Which order would you slow if the supplier wanted paying tomorrow? The founder filled the rows from the invoices and the payout report, and left with the rest of the catalogue to review before the next session.

### The questions

- What does this line leave after product cost, fees and shipping?
- When does that cash come back?
- Which line looks busiest and leaves least?
- Which order would you slow first?
- Which price would you test on the weakest line?

### THE FOUR-STEP LOOP

1. The one thing: The next supplier order, due before the payout lands.
2. The numbers: Margin and cash date for each line.
3. The story: Why the busiest lines felt like the safest.
4. The commitment: Reprice the weakest lines and slow one order.

Before the next session, the founder finished the review for every line, marked the weakest ones, and checked the next supplier payment against the payout dates.

## A cash view of the catalogue

By month 6, every line has a margin and a cash date beside its revenue, and reorders are decided on what a line leaves.

**BEFORE**

- Revenue was the only number by line.
- Costs sat in three separate reports.
- The busiest lines were reordered first.
- Supplier payments surprised the bank account.

**BY MONTH 6**

- A margin after fees and shipping for every line.
- A cash date beside each line’s revenue.
- The weakest lines repriced or slowed.
- Each supplier order checked against the payout first.

The programme is the container: 12 fortnightly 60-minute sessions, a monthly scorecard, and reviews at month 3 and month 6.

## Read the line before you reorder it

Ivanka Menken built Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring for founders of $500K to $3M businesses that are growing while cash tightens. She reads the numbers with you, asks the question you have been avoiding, and keeps you to the decision you write down.
This fits if you resell products, sales are rising and the supplier keeps getting paid before the cash comes back. It does not fit if you want someone to run the books. The decision in front of you is one review. Put your three busiest lines on a row each before the next order goes out.

### It fits

- You resell other brands’ products online or through a marketplace.

- You want accounting or financial advice.
- You want a done-for-you fix or someone to manage the catalogue.
- You sell only your own hours, with no product cost.
- You want more sales before you know what each line leaves.

## Questions about Margin-First Review

### Which lines should I review first?

Start with your three busiest lines, because they tie up the most cash and feel the safest. Put each on one row: sale, product cost, marketplace fees, shipping, what is left and when the cash returns. Ivanka Menken works the rows through with you inside Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, before the next supplier order goes out.

### What counts as a line that pays its way?

A line pays its way when the margin left after product cost, fees and shipping comes back in time to pay for its own next order. A busy line that leaves little, or returns its cash late, does not. Ivanka Menken tests each line against that rule inside Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST. Check the figures with your accountant.

### What should I measure?

Two numbers for every line: the margin left after product cost, marketplace fees and shipping, and the days between paying the supplier and the payout landing. Revenue stays on the page, but it is read last. Ivanka Menken puts both numbers on the monthly scorecard inside Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST. It is coaching, not financial advice.

### What happens after the review?

You reprice the weakest lines, slow orders on the lines that tie up cash longest, and check each supplier order against the payout date before it goes out. The review is redone monthly. Ivanka Menken reads what changed with you at the next session of Cash-Tight Growth Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, before you add any new line.
