Protect one day to move growth

An example, not a client story.

A Deep Work Day is one no-meeting day a month, pointed at one lever that would move the business. Ivanka Menken sets it up inside 1:1 Mentoring, a 6-month programme at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST. If every week ends with the big lever untouched, you write a one-page brief: the lever, the meetings you cancel to protect the day, the output that must exist by the end, and the date you review it.

The Deep Work Day is a tool inside the programme, not a separate product.

A 10-person agency, one day protected for one lever

  • Week 1Meetings every day
  • Week 2Wednesday: Deep Work Day
  • Week 3Tuesday: review the output

THE OUTPUT

“The new proposal, priced and ready to send by 5pm.”

An example, not a client result. Your lever, day and output will differ.

The week is full. The big lever is untouched.

  1. 01You finish another week with no progress on the one thing that would move revenue.
  2. 02Every day fills with meetings and small tasks before you start.
  3. 03You keep waiting for a quiet week that never comes.

A 10-person agency. The founder knows the lever: the main service needs a new proposal and a new price. It has been on the list for months. Every day goes to client calls, internal meetings and the small jobs that only seem to need the founder. The lever never gets a day, so nothing about it changes.

  • Protected day this month: none
  • The lever: known, never scheduled
  • Output expected: not written
  • Review date: none

An example, before the brief. Your calendar is yours.

The calendar is the strategy

The founder in the example had tried the usual answers: work longer days, add a planning meeting, wait for a quieter week. Longer days went to the same small jobs. The planning meeting became one more meeting. The quiet week did not arrive.

Ivanka starts with the calendar, not the task list. Whatever fills the calendar is the real strategy, whatever the plan says. The business was not short of time. It was short of protected time, and short of a written output that would show whether the time was used well.

The business was not short of time. It was short of protected time.

Staying stuck means another month passes with the big lever untouched and the calendar still full.

Point one protected day at one lever

The Deep Work Day puts one lever, the no-meeting boundary, the output and the review date on one page, written before the calendar fills.

Deep Work DayAn example month of weekdays, each filled with one to three meetings. The Wednesday of week 2 is protected as a Deep Work Day with no meetings; two meetings that would have landed on it are moved to Thursday. The Tuesday of week 3 is the review date. Beside the calendar, a one-page brief names the lever, the boundary, the output that must exist by the end of the day, and the review date.AN EXAMPLE MONTH · YOUR CALENDARMONTUEWEDTHUFRIDEEPWORKREVIEWTwo meetings moved out of the day.The team is told the day is closed.THE DEEP WORK DAY BRIEFLever: a new proposal and pricefor the main service.Boundary: two meetings moved.Output: the proposal, priced, ready to send by 5pm.Review: the next session. The calendar is the strategy.Protect the day before the month fills.

Deep Work Day · a framework by Ivanka Menken

What it is

It is a one-page brief for a single protected day each month, not a productivity system. It names the one lever, the meetings and tasks that move out of the way, the output that must exist by the end of the day, and when you will look at what it produced.

What it replaces

It replaces working longer hours, adding a planning meeting, and waiting for a quiet week to start the work that matters most.

It sits inside 1:1 Mentoring, beside the Fortnight Loop and the monthly Money-and-Clarity Scorecard. Commitments kept on the scorecard shows whether the day happened. No separate checkout.

  • 01The lever: the one thing that would move the business most
  • 02The boundary: the meetings and tasks cancelled or moved
  • 03The output: what must exist by the end of the day
  • 04The review date: when you look at what the day produced
  • 05The next day: booked before this one ends

Start with the calendar, not the task list

In the example, Ivanka and the founder open next month's calendar. Which one lever would move the agency most? Which meetings and tasks will be cancelled or moved to protect a full day? What must exist by five o'clock? They write the brief: the new proposal and price as the lever, two internal meetings moved, a finished proposal ready to send as the output, and the next session as the review date. Before that session, the founder holds the day.

THE DEEP WORK DAY BRIEF, FILLED IN

The lever
A new proposal and price for the main service.
The boundary
Two internal meetings moved; the team told the day is closed.
The output
The proposal, priced, ready to send by 5pm.
The review date
The next mentoring session.
The next day
Booked before this one ends

An example. The lever, boundary and output are yours.

  1. 1The one thingThe lever that would move the business most.
  2. 2The numbersHow many days this month had no protected time.
  3. 3The storyWhy the quiet week never comes.
  4. 4The commitmentBook the day, write the brief and hold the boundary.
  • Which one lever would move the business most this month?
  • Which meetings and tasks will you cancel or move to protect the day?
  • What must exist by the end of the day?
  • Who needs to know the day is protected?
  • When will you look at what it produced?

Before the next session, the founder brings back the output from the day, or the reason the boundary did not hold. Either one shapes the next brief.

One protected day a month, with evidence

By month 6, the Deep Work Day is on the calendar every month, and each one starts from what the last one produced.

NOW

  • No day is protected from meetings.
  • The lever is known and never scheduled.
  • There is no written output to show progress.
  • Each month starts from intention.

BY MONTH 6

  • A protected monthly Deep Work Day on the calendar.
  • A written brief for each day.
  • A record of which lever moved.
  • Each month starts from evidence.

The programme is the container: 12 fortnightly 60-minute sessions, the monthly Money-and-Clarity Scorecard, and reviews at month 3 and month 6.

In the example, the founder protects one day and finishes one high-impact output: the new proposal and price, ready to send. The next month's day starts from what that output did, not from a fresh intention. Illustrative, not a client result.

Ivanka Menken in a 1:1 mentoring session, planning a founder's protected day
The lever gets a day before the month fills.

The day is held, not hoped for

Ivanka Menken built 1:1 Mentoring for founders of $500K to $3M businesses who are busy, capable and short of thinking time. She asks the hard question and holds you to the decision you write down.

The Deep Work Day is one of the tools inside that work. It does not manage your diary or do the work for you. It makes the lever, the boundary and the output visible before the month fills up.

“Personable, but straight to the point. Every session is a combination of strategy, execution and mindset.”

Business owner

It does not fit

  • You want accounting or financial advice.
  • You want a done-for-you fix or someone to manage your diary.
  • You want a time-management course.
  • You are not willing to say no to a meeting.

Questions about the Deep Work Day

Is a Deep Work Day right for me?

It fits when you know the one lever that would move your business and your calendar never leaves a day for it. Ivanka Menken uses the Deep Work Day inside 1:1 Mentoring to protect one no-meeting day a month and point it at that lever. The programme runs 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, and the tool has no separate checkout.

What happens in the work?

Ivanka Menken opens next month's calendar with you, asks which lever matters most, which meetings move and what must exist by the end of the day, and you write the one-page brief. You hold the day before the next session and bring back the output. It is part of 1:1 Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST.

What changes by month 6?

A Deep Work Day is on your calendar every month, each one has a written brief, and you have a record of which lever moved. In 1:1 Mentoring, Ivanka Menken ties each day to one written decision through the Fortnight Loop. The programme is 12 fortnightly 60-minute sessions over 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST.

What is not included?

Accounting, financial advice and diary management are not included, and Ivanka Menken does not do the day's work for you. You protect the day and produce the output; she helps you choose the lever and holds you to the brief. 1:1 Mentoring runs 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST.

Give the big lever a day of its own

If every week ends with the lever that matters most still untouched, start with 1:1 Mentoring. The Deep Work Day is inside it, and the 20-minute intro call is where you can see whether it fits.
