Build Retention Before Traffic Hits

You are about to launch the busy season, and the follow-up for first-time buyers is still a note on your desk. Ivanka Menken uses the Fortnight Loop inside 1:1 Mentoring, a 6-month programme at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, to make one retention decision before the traffic arrives: the first-purchase follow-up, who owns it and a 14-day review date, all written down and live before the season starts.

The Fortnight Loop is a tool inside the programme, not a separate product.

More traffic, no second purchase.

THE RULE

“Build what happens after the first purchase before you buy the traffic.”

Your season and follow-up will be your own.

A plan for the first sale and nothing after it

  1. 01First-time buyers hear nothing after checkout.
  2. 02Retention is a job for after the rush.
  3. 03You are about to spend more on traffic than ever.
  • Traffic: more than ever, bought in advance
  • First-purchase follow-up: a discount code
  • Owner of the follow-up: nobody named
  • Built before the season: no
  • Review date: after the rush, maybe

A season planned for the first sale only.

A busy season with no second purchase planned

  1. 01

    Three weeks before the rush

The busy season is three weeks away. The ad budget is approved, the stock is in and the landing pages are ready. What happens after someone buys for the first time is still a note on your desk: maybe a thank-you email, maybe a code. You tell yourself you will sort it out after the rush, which is exactly when most of those first-time buyers will have forgotten you.

  2. 02

    A discount code after checkout

In this case, a small online retailer was about to buy more traffic for the busy season while first-time buyers received no structured follow-up. The obvious fix was a discount code after checkout. It cost margin, it did not create a habit of coming back and nobody owned what happened next, so the code went out and the relationship stopped there.

  3. 03

Follow-up planned for after the rush

Ivanka noticed the retention system had no pre-season build. Follow-up was planned as a task for after the rush, when the team would be tired and the first-time buyers would already be cold. The founder was investing heavily in the first purchase and leaving the second to chance. The timing was the problem, not the effort.

A timing problem, not an effort problem

The real issue was timing: retention needed to be built before the traffic hit. Every first-time buyer the season brought in would arrive at a follow-up that did not exist yet.

The reframe: retention is a pre-season build, not a post-season clean-up. One written follow-up, one owner and one review date, live before the traffic, turn a season of first purchases into a list of people likely to buy again.

Retention built after the rush is a letter to people who have already left.

Every first-time buyer who hears nothing after checkout has to be bought again next season, at full price.

The Fortnight Loop, for one retention decision

The Fortnight Loop is how 1:1 Mentoring turns a decision into a written commitment and checks it two weeks later. Before a busy season, the loop picks one retention decision, writes it with an owner and a date, and reviews it while there is still time to change it.

The Fortnight Loop, for retention before a busy seasonTwo lanes on one season timeline running from now, through go-live, to the day the traffic arrives. The old plan in grey: ads, stock and landing pages ready, then busy season traffic, then a dashed box for follow-up after the rush. The commitment in gold: write the follow-up, go live tested, a day 14 review, then the same busy season traffic, where first-time buyers meet the follow-up. Underneath, two notes: the owner is one named person, not the team, and the count is first-time buyers who come back.BUILD IT BEFORE THE TRAFFIC1THE OLD PLANAds, stock, pagesNothing for buyersSeason trafficFollow-up later2THE COMMITMENTWrite the follow-upGo live, tested3DAY 14 REVIEWSeason trafficmeets the follow-up4Owner: one named personCount: buyers who come backTHE RETENTION COMMITMENTFollow-up live and testedbefore the traffic. Fortnight Loop · a framework by Ivanka Menken

What it is

It is one commitment on one page: what a first-time buyer receives after checkout and when, who owns it, the date it goes live before the traffic and the 14-day review. Underneath, the number to watch: how many first-time buyers come back.

What it replaces

It replaces a discount code with no owner, a follow-up plan scheduled for after the rush and a season judged only on first sales.

It sits inside 1:1 Mentoring, next to the monthly scorecard. Each fortnightly session starts from the commitment you wrote last time. It is coaching, not a done-for-you marketing service, and there is no separate checkout.

  • 01The trigger: a first purchase
  • 02The follow-up: what the buyer receives, and when
  • 03The owner: one named person, not the team
  • 04The go-live: before the traffic arrives
  • 05The review: 14 days after go-live
  • 06The number: first-time buyers who come back

One follow-up, live before the rush

In the session, Ivanka asked what a first-time buyer experiences in the two weeks after checkout. The honest answer was a receipt and a code. Together they wrote one retention commitment: the first-purchase follow-up, one named owner and a go-live date before the season, with a review 14 days later. The founder left with one decision, one next action and a date to check it.

  4. 4The commitmentOne follow-up, one owner, live first.
  • What does a first-time buyer hear after checkout?
  • What would make a second purchase likely?
  • Who will own the follow-up, by name?
  • When must it be live?
  • What will you count at the review?

Before the next session, the named owner set the follow-up live, tested it with a real order and noted the date the traffic started.

Retention live before the traffic

By month 6, the follow-up is live and owned, the season is read on returning buyers as well as first sales, and the next retention decision follows the same loop.

BEFORE

  • More traffic, no plan after checkout.
  • A discount code with no owner.
  • Retention scheduled for after the rush.
  • The season judged on first sales only.

BY MONTH 6

  • A first-purchase follow-up live before the traffic.
  • One named owner.
  • A 14-day review while there is time to change it.
  • Returning buyers on the monthly scorecard.

The programme is the container: 12 fortnightly 60-minute sessions, a monthly scorecard, and reviews at month 3 and month 6.

In this case, the founder wrote one retention commitment, named an owner and set a 14-day review before the busy season. The follow-up went live before the traffic arrived, so every first-time buyer the season brought in met a plan for the second purchase instead of silence.

Build the follow-up before you buy the traffic

Ivanka Menken built 1:1 Mentoring for founders of $500K to $3M businesses who keep carrying the same decisions. Every fortnight she helps you name one decision, write the commitment and check it two weeks later.

This fits if you sell online and a busy season or traffic push is coming. It does not fit if you want someone to run your marketing for you. The decision in front of you is one follow-up and one owner. Write them down and set the date before the traffic arrives.

“Helps founders lead with clarity and integrity by modelling vulnerability, emotional intelligence, and grounded decision-making. Creates an environment where leaders can openly explore challenges and grow without fear of judgement.”

Questions about building retention before a busy season

Is this only for one big sale weekend?

No. The same pre-season build works for any busy season, launch or traffic push. The question stays the same: what happens after a first purchase, who owns it and when it goes live. Ivanka Menken helps you write that commitment inside 1:1 Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, before the traffic arrives.

Do I need a big list?

No. The first decision is what happens after a first purchase, and every season brings first purchases. A small business with a short follow-up and one owner does better than a big list nobody contacts. Ivanka Menken works from the buyers you already have inside 1:1 Mentoring, 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST.

Is this a done-for-you fix?

No. It is coaching, not a done-for-you marketing service. You and your team write and run the follow-up. Ivanka Menken helps you choose the decision, name the owner and review what happened inside 1:1 Mentoring, a programme of 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, with one commitment each fortnight.

How long is 1:1 Mentoring?

1:1 Mentoring runs for 6 months at AUD $1,500 per month ex GST, with 12 fortnightly 60-minute sessions, a monthly scorecard and reviews at month 3 and month 6. Ivanka Menken uses the Fortnight Loop throughout, so one retention decision is written, owned and reviewed before the next busy season.

Make the second purchase part of the plan

If the traffic is planned and the follow-up is not, start with 1:1 Mentoring. The Fortnight Loop is inside it, and the 20-minute intro call is where you can see whether the programme fits.

Not accounting, financial advice or a done-for-you marketing service.
