Two-way door or one-way door? The question before the decision.

The two-way door question is the first thing Ivanka Menken asks before a Strategic Clarity Intensive (90 minutes, AUD $1,500 ex GST): if this decision turns out wrong, can you walk back through the door? A reversible decision, a two-way door, earns speed and a review date. An irreversible one, a one-way door, earns the full weight of the cost of delay and what undoing it would cost. The answer decides how the 90 minutes are spent.

Email your decision and which door you think it is

Two-way door

You can walk back through.

If it turns out wrong, you can undo it at a cost you can live with. It earns speed, not weeks.

One-way door

Once through, it shuts.

Undoing it would cost more than making it, or cannot be done. It earns the full weight of the cost of delay.

Four questions that sort the door

Answer them before the session. They take two minutes.

  1. If this turns out wrong, could you undo it within a month?
  2. Would undoing it cost more than making it?
  3. Does it commit people, money or your reputation outside the business?
  4. Could you test it small before committing in full?

Answer all four. Nothing you click here is saved or sent.

How the door changes the 90 minutes

The four steps of the Intensive stay the same. Where the time goes does not.

On the right, a one-way door that locks behind you: the session spends most of its time on the cost of delay and the cost of reversal, then names the first irreversible step.IF IT TURNS OUT WRONGCan you walk back through?YESTWO-WAY DOORPick, review, moveChooseReview dateMoveNOONE-WAY DOORWeigh delay and reversalCost of delayCost of reversalStepEither door: you leave withthe first irreversible step

The Two Doors · a framework by Ivanka Menken

  • Two-way doorPick, set a review date, and spend most of the session on moving and on what you will watch.
  • One-way doorSpend most of the session on the real cost of waiting and on what reversal would cost if you could.

What you leave with: The decision, which door it is, the first irreversible step and, for a two-way door, the date you will review it. The Strategic Clarity Intensive is one private 90-minute session, AUD $1,500 ex GST, live on Zoom. See the Intensive

About the two doors

What is a two-way door decision?

A two-way door decision is one you can walk back through if it turns out wrong, at a cost you can live with. Ivanka Menken treats it as a call for speed: pick, set a review date and move. A one-way door is the opposite. Once through, it shuts, so it earns the full weight of the cost of delay.

Why does Ivanka Menken ask this before the session?

Because it decides how the 90 minutes are spent. Ivanka Menken asks the two-way door question before the Strategic Clarity Intensive so the session does not give a reversible call weeks of agonising, or rush a decision that cannot be undone. The four steps stay the same; the weight given to each one changes.

How do I tell which door my decision is?

Answer four questions: could you undo it within a month, would undoing it cost more than making it, does it commit people, money or reputation outside the business, and could you test it small first. The check on this page sorts your answers. Ivanka Menken then tests the two-way door answer with you before the session starts.

What if I am not sure?

Then say so in your outline, because that uncertainty is useful. Ivanka Menken often starts the Strategic Clarity Intensive there: what exactly makes this decision feel permanent? Sometimes a two-way door has been made to look like a one-way door by fear or pride. Sometimes the reverse is true, and slowing down is the right call.

What is the first irreversible step?

It is the point after which a decision stops being an intention. Ivanka Menken closes every Strategic Clarity Intensive with it, whichever door you are facing. For a two-way door it is often small, such as an email sent or a contract signed for one month. For a one-way door it may be the decision itself.

Is this a separate service?

No. The two-way door question is part of the Strategic Clarity Intensive with Ivanka Menken: one private 90-minute session on one decision, AUD $1,500 ex GST, live on Zoom. You can use the check on this page for free. Nothing you click is saved or sent, and there is no email to give.
